2) Human Immunology
The immune system refers to a collection of cells and proteins that function to protect the skin, respiratory passages, intestinal tract and other areas from foreign antigens, such as microbes (organisms like bacteria, fungi, and parasites), viruses, cancer cells, and toxins. Current advances in translational, clinical and mechanistic research provides evidence for the modulation of immune responses by foods, dietary ingredients, and natural products. The purpose of the Immunology course is to prepare a basic knowledge of the immune response and on the mechanisms by which exposure to dietary components affect the balance between pro-inflammatory and regulatory immune responses. The main will be on human health and biomedical applications.
The course will focus on:
- Basic aspects of immunology
- Basic aspects of a mucosal immune system in the gut
- Immune-related disorders in humans
- The impact of various dietary components on the immune system
- Test systems enabling detection of immunomodulatory activity
Monitoring human immune responses
Immuno-monitoring is nowadays performed through a variety of molecular and cellular approaches, involving an array of cutting-edge technologies. This is key for human translational medicine studies on infectious diseases, epidemic outbreaks, vaccine trials, vaccination follow up, etc. The goal of this practical course is to introduce students to investigate a research subject through a variety of state of the art experimental approaches, and to sharpen them to translational medicine studies. The task of the Department of Immunology is to unravel the mechanisms of this system so that they can understand why some diseases emerge, in order to come up with new strategies to tackle them and pave the way for the development of new vaccines. This passion for immunology finds its roots in the very early days of the Institut Pasteur when the rabies vaccine was developed (Pasteur, 1885) and the first descriptions of the immune system were published (Metchnikoff, winner of the 1908 Nobel Prize for his work at the Institut Pasteur).
A lot of teams in this research department are investigating the development of the immune system. Some of the department’s scientists examine how the immune system develops in embryos, newborns and adults. Others examine the billions of microbes in the human body (known as the microbiota), which play an important role in the development of immunity, with the aim of understanding how the body lives with or fight against these microbes. Helps improve human health. Prepare for a career researching & developing new clinical treatments such as vaccines and drug therapies, or take your skills into health policy or management. You will study advanced immunological theory and techniques and train in clinical trial design and practice. Progress your oral and written communication skills while you study and produce a research paper intended for publication.
Learning outcomes:
After successful completion of this course, the student is expected to be able to:
- Define and memorize the basic aspects of immune defense reactions against pathogens and the basis of the development of immune-related diseases; Define and memorize the principles of the gut-associated mucosal immune system;
- Understand the basic mechanisms of action whereby dietary components can modulate immune function with consequences for the overall health of the individual;
- Apply the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the course to resolve real-life case-related questions; Have basic knowledge about how to test for immune activity of nutrition.
Careers:
The course will prepare you for a range of senior roles in health research. You might work in a hospital, private research institute, diagnostic laboratory or pharmaceutical company, or for a government agency involved in health policy or delivery.

Oral medicine and stomatology training in dental school is usually focused around nonsurgical controlling of oral symptoms of systemic diseases, oral mucosal lesions, and other oral conditions not combine with the teeth. Stomatology ( Oral Medicine) is evolved from the Dentistry of a study of human teeth and dentition, oral soft and hard tissue and maxillofacial, neck diseases of different disciplines,separated into two parts of basic medicine and clinical medicine. Including oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics,oral prosthetics,children’s oral science, oral prevention.
Stomatology is a medical discipline which covers the study of the mouth. Historically it was recognized as a medical specialty in many provinces of the world, though now people are more likely to refer to stomatology as “dental medicine,” depending on where they are located. In some countries, it is still possible to specialize in stomatology as a discipline different from dentistry. The practice of stomatology also includes performing a variety of procedures in the mouth. At the time of their training, stomatologists have a chance to watch and practice a wide range of oral policy so that they can learn to do them safely, correctly and fast. Things like tooth removal, gum grafts & fillings can all fall under the heading of the practice of stomatology. The study of stomatology also includes the application of knowledge from this field to forensics, to find out victims, criminals, and other people who are involved in forensic cases.
This discipline can be a bit broad, and there are a number of settings in which it can be applied including classrooms, hospitals,clinics, and forensic facilities. The length of time spent studying stomatology can vary, based on where someone decides to work and what kind of practice he or she is interested in. As a common rule, people should plan on being in school for at least ten years to study stomatology and pursue a professional career in this field, including undergraduate work along with medical education,occupation, fellowships, and postgraduate work.
